Blender 3d Modeling Software is an open source 3D modeling and animation program.  What make blender fun is that it also incorporates a built in game engine. Blender is open source and free, and it’s source code is readily available.  This allows anyone with the skills and knowledge to modify the software to suit their own needs. Because of the fact that it is free, and that anyone can develop it, Blender has allowed more people than ever before to have access to 3D software.  This type software is generally very expensive. So how exactly did such a powerful program come to be? How did it become something that the public can access for free?

It started out as an in house tool for the animation studio called Neo Geo.  The main designer for Blender was non other than Ton Roosendaal. Neo Geo was later acquired by another company, which prompted Roosendaal to co found the company, Not A Number technologies. Roosendaal continued to work on and develop his 3d modeling software, Blender. In 2002 Not A Number went bankrupt, which prompted Roosendaal to start the Free Blender campaign, which was a crowd sourcing attempt to raise enough funds to allow Blender to become a free and open source program. The campaign was successful and Blender became free for everyone giving the public access to a powerful 3D tool for the first time that would not cost them a lot of money to use.

While Blender is very powerful and is a very capable piece of software, it does have it’s drawbacks. The users of Blender have described the interface as being quite challenging to learn. At the end of the day, developers that support open source, help maintain and improve Blender.  A dedicated team will traditionally develop pay for use 3D software. This means Blender might not be as uniform and easy to navigate as most other similar types of paid software. The progress that has been made in Blender’s development is truly amazing, especially when you consider that said progress was accomplished largely through the efforts of volunteers. People work on and develop Blender for love of the program and to improve it for others, which has caused it to rapidly evolve.

3D Sculpting Tools

In recent years Blender has added powerful 3D sculpting tools to it’s already standard modeling capabilities. While not yet on the level of high end digital sculpting programs it is a step in the right direction.  With time time improvements will surely allow Blender to look eye to eye with other sculpting programs. Another recent development is the creation of auto rigging and auto skinning technology. The process of creating a rig and then attaching it to a mesh is extremely time consuming and challenging work, so auto rigging has been a dream of 3D artists and game developers for years. The 3D auto rigging procedure is still in it’s infancy and hasn’t really been perfected by anyone yet.

A humble in house tool might be the beginning for Blender, however it has evolved into a massively popular piece of 3D software.  Many artists, movie makers, and game developers around the world absolutely love this free software. The fact that it continues to grow and evolve is testament to the dedication of the public and those that work tirelessly to help make Blender as complete and powerful as possible.
